Pope John Paul II wrote
‘to make the Church the home and the school of communion: that is the great challenge facing us now….if we wish to be faithful to God’s plan and respond to the world’s deepest yearnings’ (2001).
Our retreat is to promote a spirituality of communion in ourselves so that we can appreciate the need to strengthen our neighbourhoods in our parish.
‘Let us have no illusions: unless we follow this spiritual path, external structures of communion will serve very little purpose. They would become mechanisms without a soul, ‘masks’ of communion rather than its means of expression and growth’ (John Paul II—2001).

Sydney this week to examine applications for declaring some marriages null. To prepare for the session, I burnt the midnight oil in recent weeks reading and assessing 1,326 pages of evidence. The process shows how respectful the Church is of people when they say ‘I take you as my husband/wife’. Unfortunately, some people lack the ability to put their intentions into practice

Calling for the reinstatement of the Racial Discrimination Act in the N.T.—what the Victorian Council of Churches (VCC) said last week: ‘We acknowledge the goodwill of governments in attempting to address decades of neglect in the areas of Aboriginal policy, planning and service delivery. However the VCC also believes it is the duty and responsibility of government to ensure that legislation, policies and actions comply in all respects with obligations to which Australia is signatory or for which it has declared its support. The Executive of the Victorian council of Churches calls upon Prime Minister Rudd to ensure that Professor Anaya’s report will be viewed as a valuable contribution to expert policy advice’. We invite you to join parish Social Justice Group members in writing to PM Rudd.
