SUNBURY TRADE TRAINING CENTRE

A statement from Cluster of Schools is being released. The cluster of schools are Sale- sian College, Sunbury College, Sunbury Downs College and Sunbury & Macedon Ranges Specialist School.
The four principals of the cluster schools have worked together over eighteen months in a selfless way for the benefit of the young people of
Sunbury. Last week, the final submission was made to the Federal Government to fund a new 6 million dollar trade training centre on the corner of Riddell and Racecourse Roads, with a component also at Sunbury Downs College. The new purpose built teaching facility will offer VET Certificate II level studies in eight trades—Aeroskills, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, Hospitality, Building and Construction, and Electro-technology. The proposal has been supported by the Catholic Education Office and the Salesian Congregation. The full statement is in the Salesian College newsletter and other school newsletters. These VET subjects can be part of VCE and VCAL.
The cluster has been supported by a consortium of interested groups including Hume Council, Victoria University, Batman Tafe, Qantas, Honda,
Western Water and the State Government Department of Education.
If funded in October 2009, the new trade training centre hopefully will open in February 2011.

WORKERS IN THE VINEYARD

This weekend we will be invited to pray and think about our involvement in parish life. We will be asked next weekend to indicate the areas in which we sense that God is calling us to serve and the weekend after that we will have a special commissioning ceremony at each Mass to ask God’s blessing on the work that we have offered to do and to pray for each other as we work together to make the Kingdom of God ever more present here and now.

Please join us in praying to the Holy Spirit that he may light a fire of love in the hearts of our parishioners

Ask the Lord of the Harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field

Having received the Spirit that make’s you God’s own children, you are called to proclaim “Glory to the Father, to the Son and the Holy Spirit: to God who is, who was and who is to come.” Alleluia!

H1N1 INFLUENZA (HUMAN SWINE FLU)

With the increasing prevalence of HSF into our community, Archbishop Denis Hart offers this advice:
Priests and extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should practice good hygiene;
Holy Communion should only be distributed under the species of the Consecrated Host and not the chalice;
Prudence suggests the reception of the Host on the hand, but with respect for the freedom which Rome provides in this matter;
At the sign of peace, the Archbishop suggests using a nod rather than a handshake or embrace;
People with flu-like symptoms should not come to church while they are sick;
Any queries re H1N1 influence can be directed to: The Swine Influenza Hotline—phone 180 2007; Nurse-on-Call—phone 1300 606 024; your doctor (GP).
Copies of the Archbishop’s letter are available at the Welcoming Desk in St Anne’s Church and at the back of O.L.M.C. Church.

NEWS FROM THE SOCIAL JUSTICE GROUP

Reconciliation Week 27 May—3 June. Last Tuesday 26 May we celebrated Sorry Day. In future this day will be known as the Anniversary Day for the Bringing them Home Report which was tabled in Parliament in 1997. 13 February will be the new Sorry Day commemorating the National Apology of 13 February 2008. Today (31 May) at 11.00am at The Shrine there will be the annual Honouring Indigenous Men and Women Shrine of Remembrance Service.

‘Samson & Delilah’, a film by Aboriginal Director, Warwick Thornton, picked up the Audience Award at the Adelaide Festival, where it received a 5 minute standing ovation. The film is inspired by Thornton’s own experiences growing up on the streets of Alice Springs.

On the local scene: a May 26 event was organised by the newly formed Sunbury Indigenous Group. Members of this group have been invited to meet with the Social Justice Group to see how we can work together to support the Aboriginal people living in Sunbury today. Prior to our recognition of the traditional owners in 2002, we made contact with the late Norm Hunter, Wurundjeri Elder, who shared with us his own story and that of his ancestors on whose land we now live. We now have Aboriginal people who are living here in 2009 who we can learn from and share the journey of reconciliation.
