There will be two sessions, 9.30am and 7pm. Prep 2014 Information sessions were very well attended on Wednesday. Please do not leave enrolment to the last minute to avoid disappointment.

SCHOOL AUDITS

Recently, both of our Primary Schools had their annual audits of finance by DeLoitte’s, and both schools were given a clean bill of health.

INCREASED PARENT PARTICIPATION

There has been an increase in parent participation this year with more parents taking part in our School Advisory Committees which met last Wednesday evening in the Parish Centre.

OLMC YOUTH CHOIR

If you are interested in being part of our youth choir, please contact Catherine at olmcyouthchoir@yahoo.com.
Practise is usually only twice per month and sing at Mass once per month.
We have a great bunch of kids practising at the moment to help make Mass an uplifting experience and would love to hear from children who would like to be part of this.
Today young people who formed the core of this choir in 2012 are being recognised by a badge this Sunday. We congratulate Allanah Bieshaar, Ella Blackamore, Laura Carville, Philippa Carville, Sian D’Monte, Letitia Fernandes, Ashleigh Howard, Jessica Jacob and Sinead Tighe.

OUR STUDENTS PERSONAL LEARNING

Over the three days of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week, every child in Years 1 to 6 came in for an individual session with their 2013 teacher for forty minutes during which time their teacher gathered comprehensive data for their learning this year. The days are long gone when every child in Year 3 read the Grade 3 Reader. Now every child is on their personal learning plan prepared for their stage of development of learning.

2013 SCHOOL YEAR IN OUR SCHOOLS

Between 30 January and 1 February, students in Years 1 to 6 will attend school at their appointed time so that assessment can be carried out for their personalised learning programs for 2013. Foundation term will begin on 31 January at 8.45am.
With the commencement of the National Curriculum, the first year of primary education is now called Foundation Year, a more appropriate name for this most important year of school. It replaces previous names: ‘Reception’ (SA), ‘Kindergarten’ (NSW), ‘1st Year’ (Qld), ‘Prep’ (Vic), etc.

CHILD ABUSE ENQUIRY

VICTORIAN PARLIAMENTARY ENQUIRY AND NATIONAL ROYAL COMMISSION INTO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
The first focus is our compassion for the victims. Many of you will know a victim abused by a church person or someone else. Some of my friends are abuse victims and the devastating effects of the abuse can be seen 40 or 50 years later.
My hearing first hand from victims has made me realise how debilitating such abuse is.
The great English Cardinal Newman (1801-1891) wrote “We must face the facts.. we can’t change the facts; we must face the truth.”
“Facing the Truth”, the submission to the Victorian Enquiry from the Victorian Catholic Church has been accepted by the Enquiry and can be viewed on the special website www.facingthetruth.org.au  The website has an 8 page executive summary with graphs and the whole report of 155 pages. There are updates on this website.
The Church has three goals:

1.         To assist the healing of the victims. In Melbourne, the Church provides special counselling.
2.         To deal promptly and effectively with those guilty of abuse.
3.         To prevent further abuse in the future.

As we mentioned in March this year, there has been another revision of the Code of Conduct for caring for children in the Melbourne Parishes. Our Parish is implementing this Code, especially in regard to “Working With Children Checks” (WWCC).
In our two primary schools, we are teaching children to be aware, to speak up and be assertive. The FBI states the best defence against predators is assertive children as abusers prey on quiet, isolated children. We have recently installed a higher fence around St Anne’s School. All visitors to our schools must sign in. All classroom helpers and contractors must have a WWCC.
As Jesus taught, “The truth will set you free.”

PARISH COORDINATING TEAM

Last Wednesday, 15 team members (five apologies) met and took up again the proposals from the Annual Parish Assembly. Some members offered their research on what other parishes are doing in hospitality, on what other schools are doing with breakfast clubs, on the needs of AIDS victims in remote PNG and on how technology could assist communication within our Parish.
Recent new initiatives were mentioned; the breakfast club at St Anne’s and the Preps at OLMC having lunch for the Evergreens (Seniors). Our next meeting is in February 2013.

INCREASING ENROLMENTS AT OUR THREE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS IN 2013

At St Anne’s School, there will be two extra classrooms of students to cater for the rising enrolments, while OLMC School will continue at full capacity.
At Salesian College, the enrolment will be 100 more students than in February 2012, with a total enrolment of 1140 students, the largest enrolment ever.

NURTURING THE WHOLE STUDENT

At the moment, Catholic schools are funded at 20 per cent less than government schools. Including school fees, this funding gap is 10 per cent. Every effort is made to ensure that the children’s learning needs are met, so they can reach their full potential and achieve their best. Our schools seek to foster a sense of community. Our teachers and staff work with families to develop the whole child: spiritually, emotionally, academically, physically, socially and culturally. Students in Catholic schools are encouraged to engage with their communities, serve others and embrace social justice. Our schools need government funding to help build a strong community. PRAY FOR YEAR 12 STUDENTS

This week the students studying Year 12 have finished their school year.
Their final exams will start Thursday 1 November.  These young people are starting out on a journey that will shape their futures and we join together as a Parish to give them support by remembering  them in our prayers.

Loving God
We pray for the Year 12 students of the parish who commence their final school exams this week.
In this hectic and stressful time, may they find peace and comfort in the loving support of this faith community, their families and friends and the teachers who support their journey of growing into young adults.
May the significance of this important time not be lost on our young people.
Bless them with a healthy, happy, and rewarding future, in which they clearly see their ability and never cease to follow their dreams.
AMEN.

CELEBRATION OF THE CHILDREN WHO ARE IN YEARS 1 OR 2 THIS YEAR AND THEIR FAMILIES

The 10.30am Mass at St. Anne’s Church on Sunday 28 October will be a special celebration of the blessings which your children and your family have received from God and which you bring to our community.    The children are preparing something special for this celebration and during the Mass will receive a blessing and a small gift from the parish community.  All welcome.
