CENTENARY BELL PROJECT

In mid 2006, all parishioners were invited to a discernment about renewing our churches held over five Saturdays. The group of up to fifty-five parishioners published a booklet of concepts to guide the renewal and was delivered with your Thanksgiving envelopes in December 2006. One concept was……’at both locations, we long to be called to our liturgical celebrations by the sound of a church bell. At Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, this may only require restoration of the existing tower bell’. To mark the centenary of our parish and the sesquicentenary of our school, the Centenary Committee is promoting a new tower to house the original bell which was at O.L.M.C. from about 1908 to 1992. The project needs to be funded before commencement

100TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF JOHN & ELLEN REDDAN

John Reddan was born in County Clare Ireland around 1835. He came to Australia in October 1860. John’s older sister Johanna arrived in Victoria before him in 1854. It is believed that John spent his first night at Johanna’s place in the Bulla area. They were later joined by their brother Michael and their sister Mary. On 11 January 1870 John Reddan married Ellen Geary, also from County Clare, at St Francis Church in Melbourne. John signed his marriage certificate with an ‘X’ and probably never learnt to read or write. He spent his life in the Bulla area as a farmer.

Just prior to his death on 19 September 1909, John received confirmation of the direct family connection between the Reddans of Bulla and the Reddans from Mullagh/Milltown Malbay in County Clare. John and Ellen have hundreds of descendants throughout Australia.

Following a family collection, the headstone and memorial for John and Ellen were erected at Bulla Cemetery in September 2007.

GOLDEN JUBILEE OF FR. BERT AS A RELIGIOUS

As the Church teaches

‘Christ proposes the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obediences in their great variety to every disciple….the religious state is one way of experiencing a ‘more intimate’ consecration, rooted in Baptism and dedicated totally to God’ (Vatican II PC.5)

‘contributing to the saving mission of the Church’ (Vatican II LG.43).

We rejoice in Fr. Bert’s dedication to the religious life for 50 years and thank God for the graces given him in his life and his work for the Church.

FLOWER VASES

As previously mentioned, vases of flowers on the statue pedestals are a risk to safety as was obvious in the accident last Wednesday during the distribution of Holy Communion.

SILENCE AFTER EACH READING

As stated in the new Missal

‘by their silence and singing the people make God’s word their own’ (No. 55)

the readers are asked to pause for 60 seconds before proceeding.

BOOK – PARISH HISTORY

We wish to advise we have ceased taking any further information for the book to be published to celebrate our Parish Centenary. The book is now in the final stage of preparation before going to the Publisher.

SPECIAL FATHERS’ DAY COLLECTION

SPECIAL COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND
PRIESTS’ RETIREMENT FOUNDATION
FATHERS’ DAY APPEAL

Archbishop Hart writes: ‘Dear friends, I would be most grateful if you can contribute to the Fathers’ Day Appeal for our retired priests. Some donors have been supporting the Appeal since its inception in 1990 by the late Archbishop Little (R.I.P.). This shows how much the Catholic people of Melbourne value the huge contribution made by priests who are now retired, but have cared for them in former times.
Your generous donations have ensured a normal living for our priests who have served actively in the Archdiocese, but who are now elderly and frail. In fact, in the past twelve months, the Priests’ Retirement Foundation has assisted me in caring for about one hundred sick or retired priests.’
Our support for our retired priests and sick priests who have shown us deep spiritual care, is a true sign of gratitude.
Be sure that I will remember you all in my Masses and prayers’.

PARISH CENSUS

As part of our Parish Neighbourhood Target—’that all the people of OLMC Parish are aware of the value of every person’ – we are planning to conduct a parish census during October. Shortly we will be inviting any parishioners who may have some time to help with the census to register at the parish office
