MELBOURNE PRIESTS’ GATHERING

Earlier this month, 120 of us gathered at the request of our archbishop to support one another.  As usual when priests gather, there was plenty of talk, laughter and good will.  This supports the recent survey of 1,286 priests in U.S.A. which found that 90.2% of priests are happy overall.  A similar survey in 2001 gave identical results.  These surveys contradict the public perception of most of the Western world that ministerial priesthood is a sad and lonely life.  ‘When priests speak from the heart they will tell you that they find priesthood satisfying; they enjoy the ministry of a priest; and they’d do it all over again’ (Fr. S. Rossetti, Washington D.C.).

ANNUAL MELBOURNE PRIESTS’ CONFERENCE

The Archbishop requested all his priests to gather at Geelong last week for a four-day residential conference on the theme ‘the Person of the Priest’.  Our keynote speaker was Fr. Tim Costello, a New Zealand Marist Father.  After many years working with seminarians and religious in formation, he is now a lecturer in Rome where he teaches in the Institute of Psychology.  He gave us six presentations of about an hour each.  We did group work as well among 105 of our confreres.  Fr Martin Ashe and his committee organised the conference.

CELEBRATION OF PARISH CENTENARY AND SCHOOL SEQUICENTENARY

A committee, drawn from the Parish Animating and Coordinating Team, our schools, Parish Historical Committee, have met twice in recent months and has set out a series of Activities to celebrate the 150th anniversary of O.L.M.C. School founded in March 1860 and the 100th anniversary of our parish founded in January 1911.

The provisional program of events:

2010
Weekend of 20/21 March: Celebration of School 150th anniversary—stall at Sunbury Festival, School Reunion, Launch of History Book
17 April: Bush Dance at local farm
4 June: Trivia Night based on parish history at Parish Centre
16 July: Parish Feast Day
8 August: Parish Concert on Feast of Blessed Mary MacKillop
26 Sep: Feast of St Michael, celebration of the history of Bulla
9 Oct: Parish Ball at Parish Centre
7 Nov: Car Rally to local landmarks
2011
27 Feb: Final Celebration to mark 100 years of Parish establishment

Those involved included accountants, architects, a town planner, a lawyer, educationalists, an engineer and experts in government legislation. At the end of each session, we all agreed on some changes and our future approaches, and went away contented. It demonstrated to me that no one person has all the truth (only God has) and no one is so poor that they have nothing to offer in resolving problems. The people of Nazareth were closed and unable to receive God’s wisdom. How open am I? How prophetic?
