Care of our Marble Altar and Wooden Sanctuary

Care of our Marble Altar and Wooden Sanctuary is undertaken by Raelene who uses special treatments.
The removal of candle wax from the wood and carpet is a very time-consuming task.
Hence, candles are to be extinguished only by the means of the special extinguisher so no blowing out of candles (it is not a birthday cake!).
Raelene spent a couple of hours last Saturday removing wax.

THE BEATIFICATION OF POPE JOHN PAUL II

The Beatification of Pope John Paul II takes place today in Rome.
Born in 1920, at the age of nine he lost his mother.  During the Nazi occupation of Poland, he worked in a quarry and later studied secretly for the priesthood at the risk of arrest by the Gestapo.
In 1946, he was ordained a priest, in 1958 he was ordained a bishop and in 1978 elected pope, the first non-Italian since 1523.  During the next 26 years, he was a ‘pilgrim pope’ visiting 129 countries including Melbourne in 1986.
He became the first pope to enter a mosque (in Damascus) and a synagogue (in Rome).
His declining health did not stop his travel or meeting people in the Vatican.
In 2005, he entered eternal life peacefully from his own apartment.
His writings will guide us for years to come, especially his encyclical for the new millennium in 2000.

THE ROYAL WEDDING

Among the invited guests are the three Cardinals of the U.K.—Murphy-O’Connor, O’Brien and Brady, plus the Pope’s ambassador Archbishop Mennini.
The Catholic Bishops of England and Wales have issued a special prayer for this time:

‘We ask your blessing upon His Royal Highness Prince William and Catherine as they pledge their love for each other in marriage.
May your love unit them through their lives.
Grant them the strength to serve you, our country and the Commonwealth’.

THANK YOU SO MUCH, PETER

Peter Readman- has been our voluntary maintenance coordinator for twenty years.  In that time, he  has carried out maintenance on our two churches, convent, parish office and presbytery.  In addition, he has coordinated the engagement of carpenters, electricians, fencers, plumbers, painters, slate repairers and other tradesmen.  He has helped us fulfil our statutory obligations for health and safety.
Peter has been available and prompt to assist at all hours.  His wife Pat has been a gracious secretary taking phone calls whenever there has been a crisis.  A visiting priest said recently ‘you have a big plant here’.  Only Peter would know how many hours he has given to our community in service since 1991.
Peter has decided to finish this service and will continue to serve us in other ways.

As a result of our Stewardship Program we now have four men doing the maintenance Peter did:  Ben, Colin, Jo and Vern.  There was a hand-over meeting of several hours last Tuesday.  When three of our buildings are over 100 years old, there is much maintenance to be done.

NEWS FROM PARISH SOCIAL JUSTICE GROUP

The Social Justice Group was formed in 1999 and during the Jubilee Year (2000) we focused on acknowledging the Aboriginal people as the traditional owners of this land.  Following contact with a local Wurundjeri elder we passed on the story of this area and in 2002 the parish made a formal acknowledgement.  The plaque stands between St Anne’s Church and the parish office.  We present Aboriginal aspects in the liturgy on Sorry Day and Aboriginal Sunday.  We place notices in the newsletter regarding other social matters as they come to our attention and we welcome anyone wishing to join us in this work.  Over the coming weeks we will share some insights into Aboriginal Spirituality.  Further info. contact Joan Koren 9744 3357.

ECUMENICAL GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE

The Christian Churches of Sunbury have again arranged an Interdenominational Good Friday Service to be held on the Village Green commencing at 10.00am.  Traditionally there has been a great spirit of Christian unity associated with this service, as members from all the Sunbury Christian Churches gather together in remembrance of the sacrifice made by Jesus some 2000 years ago for our salvation.  All parishioners are encouraged to attend and to afterwards enjoy a cuppa and hot cross bun with fellow Christians.
Volunteers are needed to set up on Thursday afternoon.

NEWS FROM PARISH SOCIAL JUSTICE GROUP

Navi Pillay, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, will visit Australia in May.  Last year Aboriginal Elders visited Geneva to raise the Northern Territory Intervention with the Commission.  The intervention imposed in June 2007 without consultation, continues to be a source of grave injustice.  You can help by signing a letter requesting Navi Pillay to address this issue.  Copies from http://www.concernedaustralians.com.au or at Welcoming Desk.  Also at Welcoming Desk copies of ‘New Detention Centre—a hard-hearted response:  Bishop’;  Pope Benedict’s World Peace Day Message—The Path to Peace;  Feast Day Mass of St Joseph the Worker—all workers are invited.

CATHOLIC DOCTORS WARN OF ALCOHOL & DRUGS DAMAGING YOUTH

Dr Clare Walker, president of the Catholic  Medical Association (U.K.) has warned drugs are responsible for a huge rise in mental illness among young people and the problem is not being properly addressed.  ‘The quintupling of intractable depression rates in young adulthood after a history of taking cannabis or certain other illicit drugs is still not publicised’.  She pointed to studies which show that teenagers who drink alcohol regularly are more likely to suffer from depression.
