  • Tuesday 7.30pm: Communal Penitential Service in preparation for Easter when we shall renew our baptismal commitment.  The  theme  will  be  the  forgiving father  as Jesus taught us in Luke 15.  We will leave with a new attitude to live out in our centenary year.

ECUMENICAL GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE

The Christian Churches of Sunbury have again arranged an interdenominational Good Friday Service to be held on the Village Green on Friday 2 April at 10.00am. The service will be held in a large marquee so don’t be discouraged if the weather is inclement. Traditionally, there has been a great spirit of Christian unity associated with this service as members from all the Sunbury Christian churches gather together in remembrance of the sacrifice made by Jesus some 2000 years ago for our salvation. All parishioners are encouraged to attend this service and to afterwards enjoy a cuppa and hot cross buns with fellow Christians.

VALE FR . JOHN MULLALLY

Born in 1928 in Tipperary, he studied for the priesthood in the seminary in Carlow which, at the time, had about 170 students. This seminary has been closed for some years due to a lack of vocations. About 30 priests came from the Carlow seminary in the fifties to Melbourne. John arrived in Melbourne in 1952 and served in various parishes, was a lecturer at Mercy Teachers College and successively parish priest of Doncaster, East Melbourne, Maidstone and Essendon until 2009 when he retired. He also served on several diocesan committees for many years. His wise advice was often sought. He helped me twenty-four years ago with the Thanksgiving program. May this great priest receive the reward of his long labours……Fr Kevin

150 YEARS OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLING IN OUR PARISH

On 26 March 1860, thirty-two students had their first day of school in Our Lady of Mount Carmel School which was a single classroom built of bluestone and timber. Within two years, the enrolment doubled to 64. In 1974, the School Board of O.L.M.C. advised Fr. Jim Feehan to build a second school in Sunbury and to name it St Anne’s which opened in 1976.
Today is a great milestone in the life of the People of God in this area of Bulla, Clarkefield, Diggers Rest, Sunbury and Wildwood. We rejoice in the commitment of parents, teachers and priests to provide a Catholic school for 150 years, during which time the parents fully funded the school from 1872 to 1973 as there was no government funding for a century. Currently, there is a total of 785 students in our parish schools, plus 1,072 in Salesian Secondary College.
