ANNUAL MELBOURNE PRIESTS’ CONFERENCE
The Archbishop requested all his priests to gather at Geelong last week for a four-day residential conference on the theme ‘the Person of the Priest’. Our keynote speaker was Fr. Tim Costello, a New Zealand Marist Father. After many years working with seminarians and religious in formation, he is now a lecturer in Rome where he teaches in the Institute of Psychology. He gave us six presentations of about an hour each. We did group work as well among 105 of our confreres. Fr Martin Ashe and his committee organised the conference.

CARPARK CONSTRUCTION AT ST ANNE’S SCHOOL
The update began two weeks ago and will last at least another month depending on the weather. Parents are advised that in the absence of any on-site parking, they will need to allow extra time so that their children will be on time for school as parents will be parking some distance from the school. The works are being partially funded by the Federal Government ($200,000) and by parents ($100,500).
VOCATIONAL VIEW
In today’s first reading, Amos says he did not choose to be a prophet. God selected him. Maybe God is asking you to reconsider what you are doing and do His work instead.
ABORIGINAL SUNDAY
This year’s theme is ‘Honouring our Elders, Nurturing our Youth’. Aboriginal Catholic Ministry Melbourne has since 2001 been nurturing Aboriginal children by assisting families to financially maintain their children at Victorian Catholic Schools through the ‘Opening the Doors Foundation’.
The foundation began supporting 32 students in 2001 and this year supports 400.

CELEBRATION OF PARISH CENTENARY AND SCHOOL SEQUICENTENARY
A committee, drawn from the Parish Animating and Coordinating Team, our schools, Parish Historical Committee, have met twice in recent months and has set out a series of Activities to celebrate the 150th anniversary of O.L.M.C. School founded in March 1860 and the 100th anniversary of our parish founded in January 1911.
The provisional program of events:
2010
Weekend of 20/21 March: Celebration of School 150th anniversary—stall at Sunbury Festival, School Reunion, Launch of History Book
17 April: Bush Dance at local farm
4 June: Trivia Night based on parish history at Parish Centre
16 July: Parish Feast Day
8 August: Parish Concert on Feast of Blessed Mary MacKillop
26 Sep: Feast of St Michael, celebration of the history of Bulla
9 Oct: Parish Ball at Parish Centre
7 Nov: Car Rally to local landmarks
2011
27 Feb: Final Celebration to mark 100 years of Parish establishment
Those involved included accountants, architects, a town planner, a lawyer, educationalists, an engineer and experts in government legislation. At the end of each session, we all agreed on some changes and our future approaches, and went away contented. It demonstrated to me that no one person has all the truth (only God has) and no one is so poor that they have nothing to offer in resolving problems. The people of Nazareth were closed and unable to receive God’s wisdom. How open am I? How prophetic?

KSC SUNBURY BRANCH MEETING JULY

The Knights meeting for the month of July was held in the Dining Room of the Sunbury Football Social Club.
The night kicked off early with a meal which was enjoyed by all. I am told that all the meals were of a very high quality and were of a very satisfactory price.
Some of those of us who didn’t have to watch their waistlines (or could still see their waistlines) even hopped into dessert, as can be seen above. Brothers John and Peter are showing admirable restraint with temptation just an arms reach away!

Adding an extra importance to the night was the investiture of John Attard from Riddells Creek as a new member of the Sunbury Branch of the Knights of the Southern Cross. These men do so much for the local and wider church that goes unheralded from helping at Southern Cross Homes (which they started) to ushers in the Cathederal and maintenance of the parishes property. New members are warmly welcomed.
KNIGHTS OF THE SOUTHERN CROSS MEETING
Note early start time
The Monthly Meeting for July will be a dinner meeting in the clubrooms of the Sunbury Football Club on Clarke Oval at 7.00pm this Wednesday.
If anyone knows of a member who doesn’t have email or internet access, and who wasn’t at the last meeting, can they pass the information on.
HOLY COMMUNION UNDER BOTH KINDS RESUMES
On 24 June 2009, the Department of Human Services released a statement about a new stage ‘Protect’ to manage the impact of H1N1.
‘This phase recognises infections of Human Swine Flu have not been as severe as first thought in the majority of the Australian Population. Currently the majority of people experiencing flu-like symptoms are making a full recovery without medical treatment. People with mild flu-like symptoms should stay home’.
Our Archbishop gave the similar advice a few weeks ago that Catholics with the flu should stay home, not attending Mass for the sake of the common good.
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT GRANTS
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CAPITAL GRANTS TO OUR TWO SCHOOLS:
After discussion between our principals, parishioners who are educationalists, our parish priest and diocesan education authorities, the parish has been offered and has accepted new capital grants of $5.325million distributed in proportion to the number of students at each school. Projects include new classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, specialist rooms, IT equipment and school ground improvements. Construction of some projects will begin soon, while other projects are in the design phase. All projects are to be completed by January 2011. These new facilities in our two schools will enhance the educational opportunities for our current 806 students as well as the students of future generations.
