PARISH SLEEP OUT

As a volunteer of the St. Vincent de Paul Society  I have found that people live in poverty when they do not have enough resources to reliably meet their basic needs – food, housing, heating and health care, among them. Particular groups of people in Australian society are at higher risk of poverty and include those who are jobless, renters, single parent families and the elderly. Here in Sunbury the St. Vincent de Paul Society volunteers are kept busy assisting the people in our community and our funds are limited. As a result I will be participating in the “Parish Sleep Out” being held at St. Christopher’s Airport West on 26th  July and would appreciate your support in sponsoring me. All the funds I raise will be used to assist the people in our Sunbury Community.  I would like to ask you to please sponsor me with a donation?

STEWARDSHIP……A WAY OF LIFE

good-samaritan-iconCATHOLIC STEWARDSHIP FROM SUNDAYS READINGS

Today’s Gospel, the Parable of the Good Samaritan, presents the epitome of what it means to be a good steward. Jesus confirms to those around him, and especially “the scholar of the law,” that the scholar is correct to conclude that he must do two things to “inherit eternal life”: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.”

Of course, the scholar responds, “Who is my neighbor?” to which Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan, one of the most powerful stewardship stories found in Holy Scripture. Most of us are familiar with how the Samaritan stopped to help the man who had been robbed and beaten, when others walked by and tried to ignore him. Almost everyone in the story, just as most of us in this world, is in a hurry. We, too, have things to do and to accomplish. Stewardship is not always convenient.

Nevertheless, like the Good Samaritan, there are times when we must upset our schedule, our own plan, to give and share and reach out to others. Jesus’ point is that stewardship is not easy, but if we truly aspire to be a good neighbor, it is what we are called to do.

SPECIAL READINGS OF GOD’S WORD

Special readings of God’s word will be proclaimed next Sunday as we celebrate our Parish Patrons. The theme of our feast day is concerned with moulding our community and reaching out to each other as Mary reached out to help her cousin, Elizabeth, at the time of Elizabeth giving birth to John the Baptist.

JUBILEES OF MARIST BROTHERS

Last Sunday, some of the 25 Marist Brothers of Australia who are celebrating their
70th, 60th, 50th and 25th Jubilees gathered with family and friends in thanksgiving in Bulleen. It was very inspiring to learn the rich and fulfilling lives these men are leading. Of special joy to me was Br Bill McCarthy who taught me from 1959-1962 and is now teaching young Marists in Manila. Bill’s brother is Fr John McCarthy at Geelong.                            … Kevin McIntosh

PRAYER BEFORE THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

“the worship of the Eucharist outside of the Mass is of inestimable value for the life of the Church… the presence of Christ under the sacred species reserved after Mass derives from the celebration of the sacrifice and is directed towards communion, both sacramental and spiritual.”

A PARISH MINISTRY IN ACTION

Recently our Ministers of Communion to the Sick shared their challenges and privileges of bringing Holy Communion to the housebound and sick in our Parish. Each minister mentioned:

  • The welcome they received on arriving and the joy of their receiving Communion
  • The time listening and conversing
  • Their interest and importance in Parish-news and continued promise of prayers for those in need
  • The sadness they experienced when the one they served dies

We presented each minister with a leaflet of readings and prayer they could use administering Communion. Presently we have 30 ministers serving weekly.
